August 2020: Earlier this month, the Bishop of Port-Louis, Cardinal Maurice Piat, C.S.Sp., celebrated his 50th priestly anniversary as a priest in the Catholic diocese. The event was sealed with a white stone by all the clergy and two other priests, Sylvio Lodoïska and Eddy Coosnapen who were celebrating their 25 years of priesthood, at Thabor, Beau-Bassin, Sunday, August 2, 2020. Born on July 19, 1941 in Moka, Maurice Piat is a Mauritian religious Spiritan, bishop of the diocese of Port-Louis since 1993 and cardinal since 2016.
Maurice Piat comes from a Franco-Mauritian family that has lived on the island for two centuries. He is the son of Maurice Piat and his wife, née Alice Koenig. He studied at the College of the Holy Spirit in Quatre-Bornes, then made his novitiate with the Irish Spiritans, where he made his vows in 1962. He continued his studies in Dublin, then at the French pontifical seminary in Rome. He was ordained by Bishop Jean Margéot in 1970. He obtained his license in theology from the Gregorian in 1972. One of the highlights of his priesthood was Pope Francis' visit to Mauritius on September 8, 2019, coinciding with the birthday of Blessed Father Jacques Désiré Laval, the apostle of the Mauritians. With a master's hand, he coordinated the preparations for this papal visit, resulting in a high mass at the Monument Marie Reine de la Paix and the meditation of Francis at the tomb of Father Laval, in Ste Croix.
